Vector Control Focuses on Empowering Residents with New Mosquito Song, “Tip Toss Boss”

Los Angeles County (April 20, 2021) Spring season brings more than just warmer weather to the Greater Los Angeles region, it’s also the start of the mosquito season. To empower and educate residents about the difference they can make in the fight against mosquitoes, the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) released ‘Tip Toss Boss’, a fun, upbeat song that shows residents how they can reclaim their home from the tiny, pesky biters.

“With its creative lyrics, catchy tune, and easy to follow dance moves, we hope the music video will encourage residents of all ages to become a ‘Tip Toss Boss’ and remove standing water around their home and adopt preventive measures such as wearing insect repellent,” said Mary-Joy Coburn, director of Community Affairs.

The “Tip Toss Boss” video was released for California Mosquito Awareness Week (April 18th – 24th) which focuses on educating residents in California about the “World’s Deadliest Creature.”

“Our District is not new to creating catchy, playful videos to make mosquitoes something worth buzzing about,” said Coburn.

In 2017, the District created the ‘Mosquito Rap’ song to increase education about the threats mosquitoes pose to our residents; but ‘Tip Toss Boss’ focuses on the shared responsibility between the community and vector control by encouraging residents to take an active role in controlling mosquitoes in their home. The District is also known for creating trendy challenge videos and the Mosquito Question Answered (MQA) series to answer mosquito-related questions submitted by school-aged students.

In the music video, the District’s education program coordinators (EPCs) show a concerned resident how she can take action against mosquitoes by tipping and tossing various mosquito breeding sources around her home. The resident realizes how easy it is to eliminate standing water and becomes a ‘Tip Toss Boss’ as she walks through her home to prevent mosquito breeding. At the end of the music video, the camera rotates to spotlight different residents to demonstrate that the female resident acts as a catalyst for others like her to become a ‘Tip Toss Boss.’

As mosquito populations and activities increase over the next few months, it is important to remind residents that mosquito control is a shared responsibility. Residents can help reduce the mosquito population in their home and community by taking the following steps:

  • Eliminate standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs or anything that holds water for more than five days.
  • Ensure that swimming pools, spas, and ponds are properly maintained.
  • Change the water in pet dishes, birdbaths and other small containers daily.
  • Wear EPA-recommended insect repellent when outdoors where mosquitoes may be present.
