MOSQUITO CONTROL TECHNICIAN

UP TO $13.39 per hour  

Temporary/part-time hourly employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within 12 month period and does not qualify to receive Distrcit benefits, except those required by law. The Distrcit does not belong to the Social Security system. There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

BASIC FUNCTION

Under general direction of the Operations Supervisor and direct supervision of the Vector Control Specialist, theMosquito Control Technician (MCT) performs inspections (surveillance) and control operations relative to mosquito vector problems in an assigned area.

RELATIONSHIP

The MCT reports to his/her Vector Control Specialist or Operations Supervisor.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

The duration of work is seasonal, usually beginning with the onset of mosquito season in May and ending in late October.

The MCT exercises safe and proper judgment in the execution of daily vector control assignments. Although incumbent is not a state certified mosquito control technician, he/she must perform assignments under the direct supervision of certified District personnel, either a Vector Control Specialist or Operations Supervisor.

This class works relatively independent and is accountable for vehicle safety, the safe use of chemical application equipment, recording work-related data, and presenting a good public image of the District.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Inspects sources suspected of producing mosquitoes (i.e., gutters);

· Samples and collects mosquito specimens from sources;

· Records daily sampling data accurately;

· Refers all citizen concerns or questions regarding mosquito control to his/her Vector Control Specialist or Operations Supervisor;

· Operates various types of vehicles for pesticide application;

· May be assigned to assist in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds;

· Keeps a neat and professional appearance;

· Performs occasionally other tasks or functions not stated in this description, but within the scope of experience and capability; and

· Performs related work as required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

· Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation;

· Commonly used hand and power tools; and

· Basic math

· Assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds;

· Work congenially and cooperatively with coworkers.

Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.

Experience

Any experience, education or training which demonstrates the abilities and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the position.

Education

Graduation from high school or the G.E.D. is a minimum requirement.

Certificates

None required.

License

Possession of a current valid California driver's license will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this class. Must be insurable withthe District's insurance carrier.

Working Conditions

Medium Work – Incumbent in this class perform work which involves frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects of approximately 50 pounds. Assisting in lifting heavier objects is an infrequent aspect of this class.

Mobility – Incumbent must have complete and normal mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; be able to stand, stoop, reach and bend and to walk on uneven terrain, such as field, dirt banks, natural and improved stream, river or drainage beds, and shallow ponds.

Other Conditions – Incumbent(s) is required to handle hazardous substances and a variety of organisms; work, when necessary, in inclement weather.
